Smoky Valley Genealogical Society and Library, Inc.

Purpose

The purpose of the Smoky Valley Genealogical Society and Library Inc. is to preserve primary and secondary resource materials and to encourage genealogical and historical research.

The Society

The Society was organized in 1970 with nine members. Today we are an all-volunteer non-profit corporation. The membership, which averages 175, annually elects a Board of Directors to govern the organization. New Volunteers are welcome to assist with various Society projects.

Membership

Membership is open to anyone interested in genealogical or historical research. Membership categories are:

  • Individual: $20.00 a year
  • Couple: $30.00
  • Youth: (under 18) $7.50 a year + an adult sponsor

Members are entitled to library privileges, a year’s subscription to our quarterly, “Tree Climber”, and to the regularly-published Society newsletter. Each member is asked to complete a five-generation chart for the Surname file which is extensively cross-referenced. Membership is effective from January through December.

Meetings

The Society meets monthly (with the exception of the months of June, July and August) on the second Saturdays at 2 p.m. with a short business meeting followed by a program designed to aid your genealogical research. The annual meeting is held in April. All meetings are open to the public and guests are welcome.

Occasionally the Society sponsors workshops which feature speakers with recognized skills in solving genealogical problems.

Research Service

Genealogists unable to conduct a personal search for Saline County ties can rely on our experienced Research Team. For a set non-refundable fee of $20 per surname, they check available sources in our library, Salina Public Library and City and County Offices in Salina and report the results. For details send a long SASE to our Research Coordinator. Research of Saline County records include: Probate records, marriage records, cemetery records, surname file, newspapers (date of event if known or is found) and land records (must have description). Photos of tombstones may be made at a cost of $2.00 each.

Library and Archives

The Library collection includes books and periodicals from all 50 states and many foreign countries along with an expanding microfilm library. Valuable source materials are preserved in the Archives with primary emphasis given to original Saline county records.
